The series “20th Century Heritage” opens in this issue with a research on photographer, cameraman, and one of the pioneers of sound newsreel in Latvia – Eduards Kraucs. His collection of negatives depicting the construction process of power station in Ķegums from 1936 till 1940 is included in UNESCO programme Memory of the World. Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Alise Tīfentāle explains the development of Latvian landscape photography tradition and analyzes work from the 1960s and 1970s by Bruno Alsiņš – one of the founders of the national school of landscape photography. Photographer and photo researcher Arnis Balčus writes on always shocking and always censored American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
“21st Century Works” presents an interview with photographer, film director and script writer Ieva Salmane. She comments on her attempt “to explore, define and, probably, even create woman by means of photography” in her latest solo show. Art critic Jana Kukaine talks to the explorer of distant urban territories Līga Laurenoviča. The owner of Russiantearoom gallery Liza Fetisova uncovers the joys and difficulties she meets while promoting Russian contemporary photography in the art market of Paris. She introduces three photographers represented by the gallery – Evgeny Mokhorev, Oleg Dou and Igor Savchenko. Photographer Elīna Ruka, currently residing in NYC and working for Aperture, talks with the famous Joel Meyerowitz. German artist Eiko Grimberg tells about his perception of documental and conceptual photography.
